Recession to thank for rise in eco car-related green collar jobs?

The recession may be partly behind the rise in the popularity of lower-emission cars and the subsequent increase in green collar jobs in the sector.
According to Neil Wallis, head of communications for the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership, the economic slump served as a catalyst for the market.
His comments follow the release of figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, which revealed that the average new car sold in 2009 emits around 149.5g of C02 per kilometre, down 5.4 per cent on the year before and 21.2 per cent from the 1997 base level.
Mr Wallis remarked: "There's [been] some very special factors over the last year ... which include the recession - people are more focused on cutting driving costs."
He also cited the car scrappage scheme, which was introduced by the government to encourage consumers to buy new vehicles, as a significant incentive for people to opt for greener cars.
