Brown: UK must invest in green collar jobs

The UK must invest in green collar jobs if it is to achieve economic success, the prime minister has said.

In a speech made in London about protecting the country's finances, Gordon Brown suggested that putting money into low-carbon industry is one of the ways in which Britain can enhance its position.

If such measures are taken, along with other things, the UK could return to growth rates of five per cent, he claimed.

The politician went on to suggest that because of reforms made as a result of the economic crisis, such growth would be on a more secure basis.

"But let us be clear: although the economy is now growing, recovery is still in its early stages - and remains very fragile," he added.

Green collar jobs play a major part in the policies being devised by all three of the main political parties in the run-up to the upcoming general election, which will take place later this year.
