People with green collar jobs are to be involved in the installation of 1,300 electric vehicle charging points in the north-east.

Writing in the Journal, Amy Hunt noted that the facilities are to be installed in locations stretching from Teesside to the Scottish borders.

The move is part of a government-backed initiative to encourage motorists to purchase greener cars.

Money for the scheme is being provided by the government, public and private sector partners and development agency One North East.

The organisation - which in one of nine such agencies operating in England and aims to project the area as a vibrant, self reliant, ambitious and outward looking one - is putting in £3.8 million.

Some of the recharging points will be located at on-street parking points, while others will be situated in public car parks, retail areas, workplaces and transport hubs.

In addition, 240 hubs will be made available for families at home.
