Council's electric car plan 'may boost green collar jobs'

If the plans of one local authority go ahead and serve as a precedent for other such organisations, the green collar jobs industry may be boosted.
Derbyshire County Council is proposing to buy an electric car which would be used by staff who normally drive their own vehicles for business-related travel, the Burton Mail reports.
The zero-emissions device will be leased for four years at a cost of £388 and councillors claim this will be offset by money saved through powering it without using petrol or diesel.
Chris Jackson, cabinet member for highways and transport at the organisation - which is headquartered in County Hall, Matlock - said: "Climate change and carbon footprint are important subjects and it is vital that we as an authority do all we can to cut down on our carbon emissions."
He added that the car is just one way in which the council is seeking to reduce its environmental impact.
