Electric cars sales figures 'good news for green collar jobs industry'

People seeking green collar jobs may welcome figures produced by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) concerning the sale of alternatively fuelled vehicles such as electric cars.

According to the organisation, registrations of these motors rose by 164.9 per cent in January compared with the same month last year.

They lifted their market share from 0.6 per cent at the beginning of 2009 to 1.3 per cent now.

Car sales as a whole across the UK totalled 145,000, which was an increase of 30 per cent on last year.

Responding to the statistics, SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said: "The ... increase in January new car registrations provides a better-than-expected start to 2010 for the UK motor industry."

Recently, the Financial Times reported that vehicle manufacturer Nissan is set to make a decision concerning whether or not it will locate its European production of electric car the Leaf in Sunderland.
